Kogi
State government has pursued rigorously its policy
on health and has been implementing all programmes
that has to do with health related matters. To
ensure health care delivery system, there exists
General Hospitals across the state, Health Centres
and Clinics. Privately owned health institutions
also exist in the state. The state government
also partner with World Health Organization, UNICEF,
ADB in improving the health of its people. To
improve on its manpower needs, the School of Nursing,
Obangede and College of Health Technology, Idah
where set up.

The Multi millon Naira lokoja Rference
Hospital built by Gov Idris Admin.
To
provide adequate health delivery system to the
people of the state, the government has on the
construction of a General Hospital in Lokoja,
the first phase of which will cost about N502.27
million. It is the intention of the administration
to equip the hospital with state of the art facilities
to cater for the needs of the people.
Since
the inception of Ibrahim Idris administration,
a lot of land mark achievements have been witnessed
in the Ministry of Health. Details are listed
below:
1.0 Strengthening the capacity of SMOH
to deliver Quality Health Care Services
The Health System Development Project-II (HSDP-II)
fund was to carry out the following activities:
(i) Assorted Office furniture, and office equipment
such as Computer, Photocopiers, etc. worth N16,000,000.00
were procured and distributed to all Departments,
the two Health Training Institutions, and the
Hospital Management Board.
(ii) Senior management staff and programme officers
of the Ministry were sponsored to attend all workshops
organized by the Federal Ministry of Health, NGOs
and International donor agencies.
(iii) State Council on Health is being held regularly.
2.0 Human Resource Development
With the intervention of the Health System Development
Project-II (HSDP.II) the following number of staff
received training in various areas:
(i) Eighteen (18) Senior Management staff received
overseas training.
(ii) One hundred and forty four (144) senior management
staff, middle managers, programme officers, doctors,
nurses and midwives, and other Health workers
were trained in Nigeria Training Institutions
such as ASCON, NCEMA, etc.
(iii) Over 1,000 Health workers attended workshops
that cut across all relevant professional disciplines.
(iv) The State Government also sponsored 16 number
of staff on various courses while 3 others were
granted full in-service training.
3.0 Strengthening of Health Care Delivery
Services
(i) The State Government is building a 100-bed
capacity ultra modern General Hospital in Lokoja
worth N504 million and this has attained advanced
stage of completion.
(ii) 4 No. Primary Health Care Centres located
at Onyedega, Ajaka, Nagazi and Iyara have been
upgraded to the status of Comprehensive Health
Care Centres using the Health System Development
Project-II (HSDP-II) fund.
(iii) 13 No. Cottage Hospitals inherited from
the immediate past civilian administration have
been completed, and are due for commissioning
shortly. They are located in the following communities;
Onicha-Igo, Ejulejebe, Odu-Ikaka, Emewe-opada.
Buddon, Jamata. Ohono, Eggan, Ikemu-Ogugu, Ette,
Egbe, Olla and Ogodu.
(iv) 3 No. General Hospitals at Idah, Ugwolawo
and Ogori have been rehabilitated, while General
Hospital Kotn-Karfe was supplied with a generating
set; mattresses, borehole, and connection to the
national grid by the State Government.
4.0 Essential Drugs Programme
The Essential Drugs Programme has been revived
by the State Government, with the injection of
N10 million worth of drugs.
5.0 Disease Control
The State Government has graciously paid the following
counterpart contributions:
(i) Payment of N10 million counterpart contribution
to sthe World Bank assisted programme on HIV/AIDS.
(ii) Payment of N2.0 million counterpart contribution
on onchosercias programme.
(iii) Consistent funding of National Programme
on Immunization, Sight Savers, UNICEF-child survival
activities, family planning etc. This has contributed
in no small measure in the efforts to control
such diseases.
6.0 Health Training Institutions
The Health System Development Project-II (HSDP-II)
is currently intervening to:
(i) Improve the infrastructures at Schools of
Nursing and Health Technology to meet accreditation
requirements.
(ii) Support accreditation requirements of School
of Nursing Obangede with the sum of N4,434,895.50.
7.0 Kogi State Health System Development
Porject-II (HSDP-II)
Regular monthly contribution of the sum of N4.30
million as Government Counterpart Contribution
(GCC) to the project.
8.0 ADB Health Assisted Project
(i) Contribution of N26.0 million to the joint
establishment of an oxygen plant between Kwara,
Kogi and Niger States.
(ii) Payment of N6.5 million as consultancy fees
for ADB II to Steve Bernard Associate.
